I love the story of how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started.

Two guys were hanging out in their apartment. One got bored, and doodled a ninja turtle as a joke.

The second guy thought it was hilarious (turtles are slow, ninjas are fast). So, he also drew a ninja turtle.

Back and forth they went, until they had inked a drawing of four ninja turtles. To make them more ridiculous, the second guy decided these ninja turtles were teenagers, and also mutants.

Kevin Eastman, the first guy, recalled, “We were just pissing our pants that night, to be honest. ‘This is the dumbest thing ever.’”

They raked together a couple thousand dollars to self-publish and advertise the first TMNT comic book.

What seemed like the dumbest thing ever was actually a billion-dollar idea.
